Pace University Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Dr. Perl Egendorf and her Fundamentals of Environmental Science II undergraduate class used Gotham Park as a living laboratory in Spring 2024. Students practiced and honed their sampling and analytical skills across the semester by testing soil, air and water quality, while providing Gotham Park with data that we can use to inform activities and offerings to the public. The students presented their findings and recommendations to Gotham Park and our local stakeholders at the end of the semester. We were happy to learn that air and soil pollutant levels in Gotham Park, on the whole, were recorded below national standards set by the EPA.

Brooklyn Stabb, ‘26, Environmental Studies, said, “Applying not only our knowledge but our learning objectives to a local community was an excellent experience. Using what we discovered left me, and I'm sure most of my classmates, with the most fulfilling feeling about schoolwork. We learned a great amount by having access to our local community and felt like we contributed to it as well, which was a great honor.”
We are so grateful to the Environmental Studies and Science Department at Pace for their continued collaboration and involvement in the development of Gotham Park!
